(1.) Nuori koiras / Young male 28 July 2002 Siilinjärvi, Central Finland (ST 221776). The best criteria for sexing is that the male has a broader white bar on the outer greater coverts. On average, there is more green on the inner secondaries. Note the small and narrow juvenile feathers on the upperparts.

(5.) Nuori naaras / Young female 15 August 1993 Siilinjärvi (ST039447). The greater covert bar is more evenly broad. Females more often even show a double greater covert bar. The lesser and median coverts are more scaly and browner than in a male. In addition, females are smaller.
(6.) Aikuinen koiras / Adult male 11 July 1999 Siilinjärvi (ST 176098). Adults have more green on the secondaries and a bluer hue on the lesser and median covers. Note the remnants of "male plumage" on the scapulars, never found in young birds in July or August.
